Cardhu Distillery History
1824 - Cardhu Distillery was founded by John
Cumming and his Wife Helen, with them claimed
to have been Whisky Smugglers before this
time.
The bottom image right is of Statues in the
Garden showing Helen with a Red Flag, as she is
said to have waved a Red Flag to warn other
Distillers when Tax Men were in the area.
1885 - a larger Distillery was built close
to where the original was, producing large
volumes of Malt Whisky for the time.
Johnnie Walker began using Cardhu Malt
Whisky around this time to blend with the less
expensive Grain Whisky to make their Old
Highland Whisky.
1893 - Johnnie Walker bought the Cardhu
Distillery, using almost all the Cardhu Whisky
for Blending, so very little Cardhu Single Malt
was sold at that time.
1960 - much of the Cardhu Distillery was
re-built.
1974 - Whisky Made in this year was used in
the Cardhu 1974, 27 Year Old Signatory
Single Malt, that seems to be the oldest Cardhu
Single Malt available at about £1,500.
1986 - Guinness took over the Cardhu
Distillery.
1997 - Diagio gained control of the Cardhu
Distillery, and many other Distilleries around
Scotland.
The Cardhu Distillery Shop sells other
Diagio Brands such as Johnnie Walker, Cameron
Bridge, Cragganmore, Glen Spey, Knockando,
Mortlach, Singleton, Talisker and more.
