Village with a Shop and popular Bar Diner. Next
to the Diner is the Tom Weir Garden and
Marina. The large Car Park is across the road from
the Diner, at the Balmaha Visitor
Centre, where you can view information on
the area. The Tourist Trail to Conic Hill starts from
the Car Park, take the Trail to the right up
through Woodland. Once you clear the Woodland, a steep Trail
takes you from the south side over to the north
side. As you cross over the Ridge, you get a
choice of two Trails, either follow the Main
Trail, or take a Grassy Trail straight up the
Ridge. The Main Trail takes you up the north side,
then you have a short steep section up to the
Summit. It takes about 1 hour to get to the top if
you are reasonably fit, a great hill to test
your fitness on before trying any Munro's over
3,000 feet. The views from the top are amazing over Loch
Lomond and Balmaha Bay, many 3,000 foot
mountains don't have as good a views. Back down, you can follow the main trail
back to the Car Park, or follow the Grassy
Trail straight down. If you fallow the Grassy Trail all the way
down, it is a good trail until the bottom
section that is a bit wet, you then have to
cross the Main Road, cross a Small Field, then
follow the West Highland Way Path alongside the
banks of Loch Lomond to Balmaha, about 1 mile
south. There is no parking anywhere close to the
Grassy Trail. Once back at Balmaha, you have to visit the
Tom Weir Garden. Tom Weir was
one of the first TV presenters that covered
Walking Routes throughout Scotland in the
1970s. Next to the Garden is the Boat Yard and
Marina where you can partake in Watersports or
Boat Trips. Two miles north of Balmaha is Milarrochy Bay
with a Beach and Camping, a popular spot to
cool the feet down after a hike. The Map below shows the two Trails, Blue for
Tourist Trail, Green for Grassy Trail. |
