Dalwhinnie Distillery History
1897 - the first Distillery at Dalwhinnie
was built by John Grant, George Seller, and
Alexander Mackenzie, named the Strathspey
Distillery, but lasted less than a year.
1898 - A.P. Blyth bought the Distillery for
his son to be ran under the name Dalwhinnie
Distillery.
1905 - Cook and Bernheimer, largest
Distillers in the US, bought the Distillery at
Auction for £1,250.
Cook and Bernheimer had a Blending Warehouse
in Leith by Edinburgh, where they blended the
expensive Malt and inexpensive Grain Whisky to
make reasonable priced, good tasting Whisky.
They were soon selling a Blended Whisky named
Long & Short in the US.
1919 - the Prohibition began in the US,
stopping the legal sale of Alcohol, leading to
the Dalwhinnie Distillery being sold to
Macdonald Greenlees, a Scottish company
blending Whisky in Leith.
1987 - Dalwhinnie was taken over by the
Scottish company United
Distillers who owned 6 Malt Whisky
brands.
1991 - a new Visitor Centre was built.
1997 - Diagio was formed
after they merged Guiness, Grand Metropolitan
and Dalwhinnie. Diagio is now one of the worlds
largest beverage producers with top brands such
as Johnnie Walker Whisky, Smirnoff Vodka,
Captain Morgan Rum, and Gordons Gin.
Diagio owns the largest Grain Whisky
Distillery in Scotland named Cameronbridge,
producing the inexpensive Grain Whisky that
they use to Blend with Single Malt Whisky for
their Bells, J&B, and Johnnie Walker
brands.
Cameronbridge, opened in 1824, famous from
its Haig and Dimple Blended Whisky.
Today - the Dalwhinnie Distillery Shop sells
all the Dalwhinnie Whisky, and Whisky from
other Scottish Distilleries owned by Diagio
such as lesser known Lagavulin, Mortlach and
many more.
